18 ~ October 2024

The wind was blowing at times on Beartooth Pass yesterday afternoon, so I found I needed to pull my hat on tight or keep chasing it across the tundra.

Along with seeing Northern Lights and cold mountain mornings, we have been hearing elk bugling and coyotes yipping during our cabin stay. The coyotes always set the dogs off barking. It all is making this a memorable trip.

I have decided to take a break from driving though, and just stay at the cabin for the rest of the time. There is lot of country both east and west that we can hike in, without moving the truck. I just have to remember to keep yelling ‘hey bear’ to let grizzlies know we are coming.

The cabin has two wood stoves, but I find it much easier just to start up my propane heater in the mornings. I leave the 20 pound propane tank outside for safety, and bring the gas line in through the cracked open door. If it snowed though I would split wood from the shed that is packed with logs and get the wood stove going. That happened in October 2021 and the wood stove got the cabin toasty warm.

We can hear the coyotes yipping at night from inside the cabin, which gets the dogs all excited. We've also been hearing elk bugling. I love fall and have been taking some pictures that show the end of the season. It won't be too long before the snow covers it all up here west of Yellowstone.

Making noise while hiking in the pine and fir covered hills west of the cabin is something that I take serious, so as not to surprise a grizzly on its day bed. The owner of the Diamond P Ranch nearby showed me a photo on his phone of two grizzly at the front door of his house, from August 2020. Also, someone was killed by a grizzly two miles south of our cabin in June 2023.
